OSCE-supported conference in Bosnia and Herzegovina discusses countering violent extremism

SARAJEVO, 8 October 2015 - Rising global concerns related to challenges in countering violent extremism and radicalization was the focus of an international conference that concluded today in Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH).
The conference “Foreign Terrorist Fighters – Challenges for South-Eastern Europe” was co-organized by the BiH Security Ministry, the RACVIAC Centre for Security Co-operation and the OSCE Mission to BiH, and gathered more than 150 regional and international experts.
The aim of the conference was to provide a platform for national authorities of South-Eastern European countries, civil society, academic circles, and international organizations to discuss challenges in countering violent extremism and the foreign fighters’ phenomenon in the region. The participants discussed different elements that lead to violent extremism, ranging from radicalization to recruitment, departure, and return.
“Bosnia and Herzegovina is well aware of all risks related to violent extremism and radicalization,” said Mijo Kresic, Deputy BiH Security Minister. “We are active at both the national and the international levels in contributing to global counter-terrorist measures aimed at preventing, combating and protecting against all forms of terrorism and terrorism related activities. We do not accept nor can there be any justification for any form of terrorism,” he said.
Jonathan Moore, Head of the OSCE Mission to BiH, said: “The OSCE Mission to Bosnia and Herzegovina is committed to ensuring that local communities are involved in prevention of violent extremism and are empowered to promote positive narratives to counter those espoused by violent extremist groups. It is exactly at this local level that counter-radicalization measures prove most effective.”
Branimir Mandic, Director of RACVIAC, said: “Close co-operation among countries has become paramount in addressing the threat of countering violent extremism.”
“We remain dedicated to contributing to prevention of inter-state travel by foreign terrorist fighters, inter-agency cooperation and information exchange, countering the financing of terrorism, measures countering the increase of the use of information and communications technology for recruitment and to strengthening international cooperation in countering the use of the Internet and social media for terrorist purposes.”
