Lepenski Vir archeological site gets visitor centre

Serbia's Prime Minister Mirko Cvetkovic opened Saturday a visitor centre at the archeological site Lepenski Vir, which covers a neolithic settlement from about 6500 BC with unique sculptures that are considered the oldest stone sculptures in Europe.

Serbia's Prime Minister Mirko Cvetkovic opened Saturday a visitor centre at the archeological site Lepenski Vir, which covers a neolithic settlement from about 6500 BC with unique sculptures that are considered the oldest stone sculptures in Europe.
The site is located at the so called Iron Gates of the Danube, approximately 150 km east of Belgrade. The excavations conducted on a sandy bank terrace by archeologist Dragoslav Srejovic revealed a settlement which was inhabited between 6600 and 4500 BC.

Serbia will promote the Danube tourist route and enable everyone to see the site and the natural beauty of the entire area, Cvetkovic stressed. The centre includes a roof protecting the site itself and a building with an amphitheatre and exhibition room.
Coordinators will take care of the centre's operation, including the research centre, dock and other tourist infrastructure facilities, like accommodation, restaurants and themed exhibitions.

Over RSD 350 million have been invested in the centre over the past three years. The opening ceremony was also attended by deputy Prime Minister Bozidar Djelic, Minister of Economy Nebojsa Ciric and Minister of Culture Predrag Markovic.
