BELGRADE – The preliminary results of a survey focusing on the health of the Serbian population have shown that 22.1 percent of adults and 13.7 percent of children are overweight, 34.7 percent of the population smoke on a daily basis and 54 percent consume alcohol occasionally or constantly.

The results of the previous survey, from 2006, put the percent of overweight adults at 17.3, while 8.5 percent of children had the same problem.
The Health Ministry will work harder to promote healthy lifestyles and protect the health of the Serbian people, he said.
Alcohol consumption is also on the rise, since the percentage of regular or occasional drinkers was at 40 in 2006.
The percentage of adults who smoke every day or occasionally went up from 33 in 2006 to 34.7 percent, which is not a significant increase in terms of statistics, chief surveyor Jasmina Grozdanov pointed out.
