Police believe the girl was abducted in 2009 Police are investigating an alleged abduction of a four-year-old girl, who was found in a Roma settlement in Thessaly, central Greece, on Wednesday.
Officers stumbled on the girl during a police operation in relation to drugs and weapons offences at the settlement, located in the town of Farsala.
In one home, they found the girl – who has blonde hair and blue eyes – living with a Roma couple. Struck by the fact that the girl didn't resemble the people claiming to be her parents in any way, police took the couple into custody.
During questioning, the parents changed their story about the girl's origins a number of time, leading police to carry out a DNA test on the child, which proved she is not their offspring.
Police said that the couple, a 39-year-old man and 40-year-old woman, both Greek nationals, had managed to obtain a birth certificate and other documents from the authorities for the girl.
The girl is now in the custody of the Smile of the Child organisation, following an order from the prosecutor, who also instructed that her photographs be published in order to assist in locating her biological parents.

Criminal charges relating to the kidnapping of a minor and the securing documents under false pretences are being prepared against the pair.
Subsequent checks revealed that the woman purporting to be girl's mother has two Greek ID cards listing different personal information. According to one of the identities, she is registered in Larisa and is the mother of five girls and one boy. In the other, she is mother of four girls and registered in Trikala.
Three of these children are listed as being born in a five-month period in 1993 and another three in a three-and-a-half month period in 1994-95.
The man claiming to be the girl's father is registered in Farsala, where he is listed as being the father of four other children.
